What is a Media Air Filter?
Simply put, it’s a whole-house air filtration system that attaches to your A/C system between the return and furnace/air handling unit. It consists of a 4-5″ pleated filter typically. A media air filter is a tremendous upgrade from a standard 1″ throwaway filter. It has up to five times the air cleaning power of a standard 1″ filter. Also, a media filter only needs replacing once or twice per year vs every month or two like a standard filter.

Hi, I’m Tom with Complete Air Services A/C & heating out of Tomball, TX, and today I’m going to be going over with you how to change your media air filter.
First, what is a media filter? A media filter is approximately a 4-5″ filter that attaches to the return of your unit. And more or less replaces your indoor air filter. I say more or less because some builders now are putting the return air grills in that doesn’t take a filter. If that’s the case it’s fine this is all you need. If you do have a return that can accept a filter I recommend running the cheapest $1 filters you can find, nothing more. Now on to changing the filter. First, remove the door. Take note of the airflow arrow because you’re going to want it going back the same way. Simply slide the filter out and slide the new one back in its place. Put the door back on and that’s it you’re done. Now always before you start make sure you have your furnace power switch in the off position. If you can’t seem to locate the furnace power switch or you don’t know where it is you can turn your thermostat off and that’ll be just fine. It’ll make it a lot easier to change and there are moving parts you want to be careful of. That’s it that’s how to change your media air filter.
